I learned how to become a better teacher by watching, listening, and questioning other teachers for over thirty years. Now that I am retired, it's my turn to pass on my strategies, philosophies, successes, and failures to others who may learn from my experiences.

For the first time in my life, I read an entire post! That was hilarious! I am still laughing. I was born and raised in Wisconsin but I have lived in TN, KY, AL and the great state of GA and I often wondered, why milk and bread? I still don't have an answer but honestly, I don't even care anymore! I am satisfied and happy that I read this post...Thanx

Yes! Though I have been teaching for 15 years, I still struggle with getting to sleep on Sunday nights. I chalked it up to my overly-sensitive nature (despite the fact I, nonetheless, teach high school and that requires a thick skin) and a desire to do things very well professionally.

Often I will see a movie on Sunday night just to distract my emotions. It helps some, not always. Best wishes and luck. Lisa

Read your blog on Cedar Grove Elementary, i graduated in 2000. I went to Cedar Grove from kindergarten to 3rd grade and my sister went from 1st to fifth. the school was closed down in 1991, and split the students up between palmetto elementary and e.c.west elementary. i agree with you cedar grove to me was by far the best school i ever attended and have great memories all the way from how they used to give out gifts if you had the lunch tray with the x on the bottom, to the field days,,and as i look at the picture of the side of the building i couldnt help but try to squint my eyes to see if the i could maybe see the monkey bars in the background, but sadly i couldnt. thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Sorry, Jeremy! Since I am retired, I don't check comments on this site as often as I probably should. I know the stress of dealing with kids who do not read required assignments and that's why I'm a firm believer in giving quizzes over reading material. I would prefer not to do so, but too many kids will not read unless they are held accountable. I usually could still generate a love for reading because of good classroom discussions on the material. Once kids become enthralled with characters, plot, and discussions, they feel left out if they don't read. Although I think some in-class reading is important, particularly with drama and epic poetry, I rarely read novels in class except with struggling readers. It takes way too much time away from other class activities that I believe teachers need to do with students. That's just my idea. You'll have to find what works for you. I hope you have a great year!

Your school will miss you so! While it is admirable for you to step down for the sake on the incoming teachers it is a shame your experiece is being lost by the students since this step was needed.

This is my second year, so I am full of questions! I am up to my neck in possibilities and trying to determine a plan that accomplishes the following: creating a love for reading, enabling kids to write well, and developing kids who think for themselves--a tall order, but an exciting one!

Last year I found a HUGE problem with kids not doing their reading outside of class (as well as assigned work). This year I plan to read the majority of the works in class (partly also because I want to read more difficult works). I am planning to assign out of class reads as well, but these will be less demanding.

I realize I will accomplish less in quantity, but I am hoping a slower but more in-depth pace will accomplish more in quality.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Jen! I'm glad the blog helps even though I rarely update it these days. It's tough to be a career teacher and NOT have the chance to prefer for a new group of kids. Good-luck with your new English job! Have a great year!

Edie,
Wow, I want to thank you for voluntarily stepping down to open up a slot for another teacher. Here in Tucson, AZ we have also experienced the layoffs. I had been a Spanish teacher at teh same school for 5 years. Fortunately, the administrators like me. They told me that if I could get certified as an English teacher over the summer, they could give me a full-time job.
I start in 2 weeks, teaching juniors and seniors. Thank you for your blog. It has been a great resource for me as I try to change gears from one language to another. May you find joy in your retirement.
